All I did was watch. The film played over and over. The character came and went, got
bigger, got smaller, went behind some hills for what seemed like years to look for
something. What was over there? The last listing nod of a porous schooner melting into
a lake? A small village, only one house, one spire of smoke, one loaf on the table. The
lake so clear that the sky dips into it thinking it is air and runs beneath the surface a little
appendix of itself. The character is under the water too, looking out from the open
mouth of a sunken castle. One road in to this and one road out. A film, an old valley the
character treks, the only one. Silent running clouds, unbreakable water, a council of trees,
the rhyming earth and sky married in front of me. All I did was watch.
