feanne volume 3, 2007, #037
feanne was born and raised in exciting metro manila, where she still resides today. currently she is a student of interior design, but is considering a shift to fine arts. she lives with her family and three fluffy cats, who are (understandably) constant sources of affection and entertainment. she tries to draw every day, doesn't smoke, drink, or do drugs, but procrastinates a lot. 1. how would you explain 'art' - in 19 words or less? art fills you up in places food can't reach. 2. what is the first work of art you ever loved? it would have to be the broadway musical the phantom of the opera. i must have been around 5 or 6 when i first heard the soundtrack (i never did get to watch it - my mom just had the soundtrack) with the original cast (michael crawford as the phantom; sarah brightman as christine), and i loved it instantly. it's just so beautiful. my obsession with it persists to this day, so i can sing almost all the songs without having to google the lyrics. and i still can't understand why christine chose raoul over the phantom. 3. how important is theory to your art? not very important. when i'm making art i don't have any theories in mind. 4. describe your ideal art workspace. spacious, perfectly clean and uncluttered, carpeted, soundproof, cool, indoors but filled with natural light, often invaded by pet cats. 5. describe your current art workspace. cosy, messy, artificial light, cool, semi-soundproof, not carpeted, often invaded by pet cats. 6. if you could be placed in suspended animation and safely reanimated at some time in the future with the sole purpose being to see how history treated you / your art, would you do it? 7. who are some of your favourite artists (contemporary or canonical)? my grandma on my mom's side - she paints these soft, surreal, dreamy, earthy, transcendent landscapes. my mom, who paints and draws vibrant landscapes with trees. my boyfriend erik isaac, whose charcoal-and-pencil drawings are always so expressive. my friend aissa guilatco, who has the finest classical voice. my friend hannah liongoren, whose artwork is prettily playful. sumi jo, for her sublime soprano voice. gabriel garcia marquez, isabel allende, trina paulus, and anne rice, for giving the world one hundred years of solitude, house of the spirits, hope for the flowers, and the vampire chronicles, respectively. up dharma down, mirah, and cocteau twins for making beautiful music. caccini for his beautiful arrangement of ave maria. renoir for his light, rembrandt for his dark, and raphael for the sistine madonna cherubs. 8. tell us about a gallery (online or physical space) that you think rocks, and why you think it rocks. the getty center (http://www.getty.edu/) in LA rocks. i got to go there on my last trip the US, and i was awed by the extensive content of the galleries and the architectural beauty of the place itself. and, most amazingly, admission is free! 9. would you choose the baked bean jaffle or the caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart with crispy radicchio and hazelnut salad with apple vinaigrette? i'd have the baked bean jaffle because the other one's got vegetables in it. and 'jaffle' sounds like 'waffle'. :) 10. finish this sentence: "the work of art can / cannot be considered separately to the artist because ________." the work of art can be considered separately to the artist because it is static, while the artist is dynamic, and it can live beyond the artist. check out more of feanne's work at: |
