michelle blade volume 3, 2007, #036
michelle blade currently lives and works in the foggy hills of san francisco, working on her MFA in painting/drawing at the california college of the arts. her works reference cultural narrative, various types of group interaction/formation, surrealism, wives tales, and the transitional stages between adolescence and adulthood. 1. how would you explain 'art' - in 19 words or less? the creation of beautiful or thought-provoking works produced through creative activity … whatever that activity might be. 2. what is the first work of art you ever loved? i had a deep love for van gogh when i was young … i think it was the combination of colors and movement within his paintings. i was especially taken with 'starry night' (wasn't everyone?). when a traveling exhibition of his works came though los angeles i remember going and waiting for a couple of hours in line to get into LACMA to see the show with my parents. i loved his paintings so much that it became this iconic thing where every birthday and christmas from there on out i would receive posters, prints, cards, t-shirts, and books of van gogh's work from relatives. looking back, it was probably a bit excessive, but i loved it. 3. how important is theory to your art? ideas and philosophy, more than historical art theory, is what leads my work these days. it is really important to me that my work says something or discusses something. i want my pieces to address life, politics, and all the complexities that come along with being human. 4. describe your ideal art workspace. i would love to have a live-in studio space in big sur. lots of windows … lots of mountains right near the water. that would be a dream. 5. describe your current art workspace. currently i have a really nice, large studio space at CCA in san francisco. it's in a warehouse-type building that smells a bit like plywood. my studio is pretty simple. i have an army cot for naps, a large desk, a bookshelf, a little boom box, and a plant for company. 6. if you could be placed in suspended animation and safely reanimated at some time in the future with the sole purpose being to see how history treated you / your art, would you do it? 7. who are some of your favourite artists (contemporary or canonical)? paul noble, dave muller, robyn o'neal, julie mehretu, brian eno, kara walker, serge gainsbourge, joseph beuys, sharon lockheart, matthew day walker (!), willie nelson, and mark mcknight. 8. tell us about a gallery (online or physical space) that you think rocks, and why you think it rocks. oh man, there are so many galleries that rock out there … i think these ones rock the most (according to my tastes): jack hanley gallery, LA / san francisco; richard heller gallery, santa monica; blum & poe, culver city; cherry and martin, venice; lizabeth oliveria gallery, culver city; sandroni rey gallery, culver city; and the drawing room, london. 9. would you choose the baked bean jaffle or the caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart with crispy radicchio and hazelnut salad with apple vinaigrette? i don't know what a jaffle is … it kind of sounds like something my boyfriend would eat - which makes me want to go with the caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart. 10. finish this sentence: "the work of art can / cannot be considered separately to the artist because ________." the work of art can be considered separately (from) the artist because ultimately a piece of art needs to live on its own in the presence of the viewer. check out more of michelle's work at: www.michelleblade.com |
