yandell walton volume 2, 2006, #031
yandell walton completed her masters of fine art at royal melbourne institute of technology in 2005. she has a growing profile in melbourne, exhibiting regularly in galleries and installation spaces both nationally and internationally, as well as involving herself in arts-based festivals. she was granted the melbourne fringe festival visual arts award 2005 and has won the siemens scholarship in both 2003 and 2004 for her projection installations. 1. how would you explain 'art' - in 19 words or less? art is a personal inner expression that evokes a response from the viewer. 2. what is the first work of art you ever loved? probably tall ships by gary hill, because it was one of the first projection installations i had seen that used the projected image and 3D space to create a work that plays with illusion. 3. how important is theory to your art? being a contemporary artist i can't get away from having to explain my work theoretically. i don't mind this, however i don't think it is important for the reading of the work as people seem to have a connection or emotional response that's outside a theoretical context. 4. describe your ideal art workspace. old city warehouse shared with other new media artists that specialise in different fields. clean enough for computer but larger space for dirty work and setting up shoots - live out the back. 5. describe your current art workspace. it's part of my warehouse apartment - clean, not enough room to build large sets for shooting, but inspiring space to work with a G5 that i love as much as my partner. 6. if you could be placed in suspended animation and safely reanimated at some time in the future with the sole purpose being to see how history treated you / your art, would you do it? 7. who are some of your favourite artists (contemporary or canonical)? pipilotti rist, bill viola, gary hill - because their work has an affiliation with a certain aesthetic and a connection with an inner world. 8. tell us about a gallery (online or physical space) that you think rocks, and why you think it rocks. not sure about this question … 9. would you choose the baked bean jaffle or the caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart with crispy radicchio and hazelnut salad with apple vinaigrette? it really depends on how trashed i am from the night before. i would love the caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart with crispy radicchio and hazelnut salad with apple vinaigrette because i love a taste sensation - but if i was seedy i would rather the baked bean jaffle, but with cheese too! 10. finish this sentence: "the work of art can / cannot be considered separately to the artist because ________." the work of art can be considered separately to the artist because once viewed by another it become its own entity, quite often formed around the viewer's response. check out more of yandell's work at: www.yandellwalton.com |
