oscar gimenez volume 2, 2006, #023
oscar gimenez was almost genetically forced to be an illustrator. both his father and his uncle were graphic designers/illustrators. although oscar always loved drawing, he initially refused to follow their steps. after trying many other unfulfilling jobs, he finally decided to follow the call of the blood, with no regrets since then. 1. how would you explain 'art' - in 19 words or less? the ability to express your emotions physically. body and mind at the service of your feelings. 2. what is the first work of art you ever loved? it was a drawing in a book by leonardo da vinci. i thought it was the most beautiful thing i´d ever seen. i loved the way something apparently so simple required so much talent. years later i was able to see the real drawing visiting a museum. i stood in front of it for almost an hour. 3. how important is theory to your art? i never think about theory - i leave that to the critics! i never approach a job from that point of view. the first thing i see is a picture in my mind and all i care about from then on is to see that same image on paper. 4. describe your ideal art workspace. sunny, neither too big nor too small, white walls, wooden floor, everything in place, and with a huge window overlooking the sea. 5. describe your current art workspace. sunny, too hot in summer and too cold in winter, yellow walls (didn't find the time to paint yet), wooden floor, never enough tidy, and with a pretty big window overlooking one of the busiest and noisiest streets in barcelona. 6. if you could be placed in suspended animation and safely reanimated at some time in the future with the sole purpose being to see how history treated you / your art, would you do it? 7. who are some of your favourite artists (contemporary or canonical)? i already mentioned leonardo da vinci. i also love michelangelo and raphael - they were real masters in more than one discipline. generally i just love artists who can really draw. the simplicity of a line blows me away. i think james jean is one our contemporary geniuses - i find his work very impressive. 8. tell us about a gallery (online or physical space) that you think rocks, and why you think it rocks. i like a small gallery in barcelona called maxalot and www.illustrationmundo.com really rocks. it´s more than just a showcase of illustrators. as they say themselves, it's 'a place where illustration gets all the LOVE.' 9. would you choose the baked bean jaffle or the caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart with crispy radicchio and hazelnut salad with apple vinaigrette? definitely the second one. i recently discovered that pumpkin tastes great and it combines perfectly with onion. can i give you a quick recipe? chop big chunks of potato, pumpkin, onion, carrot and leek. put a generous amount of olive oil in a saucepan, pour the chopped vegetables and stir fry for half and hour. add two glasses of water, salt and let it simmer for another 30 minutes. even if you are a meat lover (as i am), you'll love this! 10. finish this sentence: "the work of art can / cannot be considered separately to the artist because ________." it can be separated. i hate when people focus too much on the artist and elaborate complicated theories about 'whys' and 'hows'. art is to be seen and enjoyed for what it is. check out more of oscars's work at: www.oscargimenez.com |
