gus fink volume 2, 2006, #014
gus fink has been known to piss off other artists, and yet still have a bunch of folks enjoy his work. people either hate him (and his work) or love him (and his work) to death - there isn't much of an in-between (apparently). when he's not too busy pissing people off, he paints, draws, writes, sculpts, sings, and pretends to be a monster (the latter, very often). 1. how would you explain 'art' - in 19 words or less? it's a flow of creative energy that continues to reshape and evolve without mistakes or premeditated direction. 2. what is the first work of art you ever loved? today while taking my daughter to the emergency room (only to find out she is fine) i saw this simple drawing on a patient's bed. it was of some dude lying straight as a board above what was supposed to be a bed, but it was just a simple long rectangle. he appeared to be levitating and had an arrow coming out of his chest. it was pretty hilarious and i'd love to have tons of stickers of it, but claiming it to be my own work, because before then nobody probably thought so much about it. shit like that you've just got to love or you're probably a big asshole - who knows? 3. how important is theory to your art? if by theory you mean serious people discussing my work very deeply so they can feel like they knew me or some shit - then bring it on! i don't have much theory with my work, but then again there are times i have too much of it - it all depends on what my current mood is or what zone i'm in. it can be scary when i feel like i'm losing myself over and over only to find more about who i am. does that make any sense? 4. describe your ideal art workspace. a huge comfy place that i'd own so i could blast music; have movies playing constantly; make a huge mess; have more supplies and tools than i'd ever need; with easy access to food, drinks, a bathroom - basically somewhere i would never have to worry about being super sloppy. also, having it so that i can be sort of organised, because there'd be so much space to place finished work. 5. describe your current art workspace. right now i draw and paint in three different places in my apartment/loft. i use the second bedroom, the kitchen table, and up on the loft - but still i don't feel like its comfy enough or free for me to create work in the way that i want. i hope to soon move so that i can feel better about my surrounding area and work more freely. 6. if you could be placed in suspended animation and safely reanimated at some time in the future with the sole purpose being to see how history treated you / your art, would you do it? 7. who are some of your favourite artists (contemporary or canonical)? i often feel like there isn't an artist that i truly enjoy all the time. they either get to a point where they make great work and it sells (good for them), but never go outside that style - only consistently doing the same sort of work over and over till you only need to see about two pieces of their work to see all that they are capable of doing. or some artists were great and now the new stuff just seems horrible compared to the older work. i'm on a search for the perfect artist - one that constantly surprises themselves and others - it's new and fresh yet you feel that all of the work is from the same person, as well as being great fun work. so i'd have to sort of 'frankenstein' a bunch of different artists - dead and alive - but then that would just make no sense and probably look shitty in a way. i often get bored when i look at an artist's work for too long. for instance, i might see some pieces of art that i really love, but when i see more of their work i just get the feeling that that's all they do, and i don't care any more. i like to be surprised, scared, humoured, insulted, corrected, and enlightened, all from one artist. 8. tell us about a gallery (online or physical space) that you think rocks, and why you think it rocks. i think jack fischer gallery in san francisco fucking rocks! for one, he took my art in as his first pick among a few other artists when he started. i haven't been there but i talk to jack about once a month, he humours me and we talk art shit like its kool-aid. he's a hard worker that moves art and loves all sorts, so right now it's one of the best galleries out there. of course, i like a bunch of others too, but i haven't been to many galleries. mostly i just send my work out and can't afford to make the trip out for the shows. 9. would you choose the baked bean jaffle or the caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart with crispy radicchio and hazelnut salad with apple vinaigrette? let's go with the pumpkin onion one. i think baked beans are gross unless they are boston baked bean candies - i used to eat a ton of those when i was a fat kid. i'd get them with twizzlers and watch hulk hogan beat the shit out of andré the giant. it was 1980-something and i didn't even know what a boner was - how sick is that?! 10. finish this sentence: "the work of art can / cannot be considered separately to the artist because ________." the work of art can be considered separately to the artist, but not if the artist is trying to just rip off another artist, which happens all the time; but still i guess in some way it's still part of that person who considers themselves an artist. often i feel that the word 'artist' can't be applied to all that say they are - for one, some 'artists' work at wal-mart or mcdonalds and have no drive to really make much art or ever challenge themselves as an artist. wait - this question is making me get nervous and sweat … i want to say something cool, but i just keep sounding like a prick. now everybody that reads my answers will think, "oh, gus fink? yah he's such a dick it makes me sick, i don't want you to even mention his name again." but i'm not a dick, i'm pretty nice overall - unless i'm in my 'happy fun humour dickhead' mode, but that's just for fun, and not to be taken serious (for the most part). everything is two-sided and nothing really makes much sense when you really think about, it so let's just start over and write down new facts about the world and all that stuff. check out more of gus fink's work at: www.gusfink.com |
