catherine insch volume 1, 2005, #006
catherine insch was born in brisbane, australia, and has just completed a bachelor of fine arts at QUT in brisbane. she likes to paint / illustrate childhood motifs, and is an avid collector of 7", toys and children's books. apart from painting and drawing, catherine likes to screen-print t-shirts featuring her own designs. 1. how would you explain 'art' - in 19 words or less? something that lets me be me. 2. what is the first work of art you ever loved? a picture of a horse that a girl at primary school drew. i thought it was the best thing ever. 3. how important is theory to your art? it's about half and half . . . i do research a lot, but my work mostly comes together from ideas i have or images i see, through looking at old children's books. 4. describe your ideal art workspace. a room of my own - not too big, not too small, with lots of tables and a window. 5. describe your current art workspace. any table that's free in my house. 6.if you could be placed in suspended animation and safely reanimated at some time in the future with the sole purpose being to see how history treated you / your art, would you do it? in the future, definitely . . . i've always wanted to take a glimpse into my future. so taking a look into my art future would be great, and a bit sinister i think (but i'm not sure why). 7. who are some of your favourite artists (contemporary or canonical)? yoshitomo nara, deth p sun, marcel dzama, the royal art lodge, neil farber, michel majerus, lucy griggs - i like the simple yet engaging styles of all of these artists and the child-like presence that creeps through a lot of their artwork. 8. tell us about a gallery (online or physical space) that you think rocks, and why you think it rocks. motel gallery rocks - it's a gallery in portland, oregon. i stumbled upon their website and instantly fell in love. although i haven't actually visited the gallery, it has great artists and an online shop where you can buy artworks from the shows and other things artists have made like cute stuffed creatures. 9. would you choose the baked bean jaffle or the caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart with crispy radicchio and hazelnut salad with apple vinaigrette? defiantly the tart - it has everything going for it and sounds mouth-watering! 10. finish this sentence: "the work of art can / cannot be considered separately to the artist because ________." the work cannot be considered separately to the artist because it is a part of the artist . . . a part of their life and interests they have chosen to express through a work of art for themselves and others. check out more of anne's work at: www.myspace.com/cather |
