emma kidd

emma kidd is an australian fine artist living in france (no, not paris). she is trying to crack the french art market, as she can't keep exhibiting in sydney (as she doesn't live there anymore). her specialty is multi-plate colour photographic etching, but she also takes photos and generally paints.

1. how would you explain 'art' - in 19 words or less? a series of flashes of recognition of who we really are.

2. what is the first work of art you ever loved? e. phillips fox beach scene ('the bathers'? - i don't have the internet to check the name). i haven't thought of that work for a very long time.

3. how important is theory to your art? theory is very important, even if it is a passing moment in time where i know what i need to do to portray that particular idea. i dislike work, where you can tell that the 'artist' honestly just thought that it was pretty. (although sometimes there is nothing wrong with that, i just dislike the idea of selling your soul to the devil).

4. describe your ideal art workspace. ideal work space would be somewhere where i could get paint and materials all over the floor and not have to worry about the stains. plus, where no one would walk on it. and perhaps not make comments about it [my art] until i was ready to have people look at it, not just any guest in my house.

5. describe your current art workspace. the floor of our living room, as normal.

6. if you could be placed in suspended animation and safely reanimated at some time in the future with the sole purpose being to see how history treated you / your art, would you do it? hard question. i visited a clairvoyant once to find out things, found, in hindsight, it wasn't entirely the best idea…i would be too fearful to find out other things, better to go with the days and see where it takes you…so my answer is no, i think, the curious monkey raises its ugly head.

7. who are some of your favourite artists (contemporary or canonical)? brett whiteley, mandy ord, marcel duchamp, réné magritte, arthur streeton, nam june pik, john baldessari, michael sowa, japanese and chinese traditional art (not any particular artist, although kitagawa utamaro does beautiful work)…too many others, i just can't think of their names.

8. tell us about a gallery (online or physical space) that you think rocks, and why you think it rocks. spaces that i think rock are; the kröller müller museum in the netherlands, roslyn oxley 9 (sydney), mca (sydney - the first space near the stairs), palais de tokyo (paris), spacejunk (manly, in sydney), australianinfront.com.au, nestcollective.com.

9. would you choose the baked bean jaffle or the caramelised pumpkin and red onion tart with crispy radicchio and hazelnut salad with apple vinaigrette? i would take the tart and salad...i am a pain in the butt with food; but i would eat the jaffle if it was offered to me.

10. finish this sentence: "the work of art can / cannot be considered separately to the artist because ________." the work of art cannot be considered seperately to the artist because if the artist is sincere, the work is a part of them, if they want to believe it or not.
